February 2008

A Message from Michelle:

Happy Valentine’s Day!!

The month of January was interesting at the Nest.  We had eight children come and three leave. One of our young ladies, Latidra, moved to “Melody House,” a great home for girls, age 12-18.  The director, Claire, is a wonderful woman.  We still have baby Neyo and Latidra comes and visits him. We received four siblings and were able to keep the youngest three; a five year old, 1 ˝ year old and a one-month old baby.   It also looks like a family has been found for our new babies Tevar and Matthew.

The American director of “World Servants,” the large team that served here last summer, recently came back for a visit.  When I shared my vision for the Nest, they asked me to write it out.  They report more teams are interested in coming to serve and we praise God for that!  Hebrews 11:1 tells us: “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.”   That is what we do here at Robin’s Nest.  We believe that God is the one in charge and He will supply our needs.

My heart is overflowing with gratitude that God has now entrusted the care of His little creations, our infants, who we can give a good start in life to and who can become God’s servants here in Jamaica.  There is much prayer taking place in Jamaica, for Jamaica. Many see the needs and want to work hand in hand with God to make a difference.  We pray that these little ones will grow up to show Jamaica what God can do when you provide a haven for the poor, depressed, and downtrodden.  May God help us all to give hope to Jamaica and the rest of the world.

Our children here memorize Psalm 27:10, “Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me.”  With God’s help, we hope to guide them to rely on the Lord, for “His ways are higher than your ways and His thoughts higher than your thoughts.”- Isaiah 55:10. We are children of the King.   All glory goes to HIM.  As we selflessly give Him our time, talent and finances, we come to realize that they are gifts from HIM, and not ours to cling to.

Numbers 23:19-20 says: “God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind.  Does he speak and then not act?  Does he promise and not fulfill?  I have received a command to bless; he has blessed, and I cannot change it.”

May God richly bless each of you, Michelle

Trip Report

by University of Sioux Falls student who spent 16 days in Jamaica during J-term

I recently had the opportunity to travel to Jamaica to work in an orphanage for a few weeks and it was an incredible trip. I have wanted to work in an orphanage for quite some time now and it was the perfect opportunity when I heard about the interim trip. This motivation came after reading in James 1:27 where it says, “Religion that God our father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after the orphans and widows in their distress”. I have been on several mission trips but my eyes were opened in new ways on this trip and God taught me new things and confirmed simple truths for me.

One of my favorite parts of the trip was staying up with Michelle, the director of Robin’s Nest, after the children went to sleep and hearing stories of how she got each of her children she cares for. It was disheartening to hear their tragic stories yet gave us even more motivation to love them with the love of Christ as His children. One of the verses Michelle teaches each of her children shortly after they arrive at the nest is Psalm 27:10 which says, “Though your mother and father forsake you, I the Lord will receive you.” This was touching for me because she truly loves them as her own children and teaches them the importance of looking to their Heavenly Father instead of worldly comforts. They are all so loved at the nest by Michelle and every single one of the staff and it was great to see that it was not just a job for them, but an opportunity to lavish the love of Christ on orphans.

One thing God taught me was the importance of giving the glory to Him when we serve. It can be very exhausting and frustrating to attempt to serve out of our own strength and out of our own desires. If we are not giving Him all of the glory, our service will end up being for all the wrong reasons or by selfish motivations or attention. A passage that encouraged me with this throughout the trip was 1 Peter 4:10-11, “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.  If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.”

The worst part of the trip for me was leaving the children and knowing I will never see some of them again, even if I visit, as some are in the process of being adopted. Another hard thing was seeing some leave while we were there to go to other homes or because of adoption. It was sad to see them go, even though they are getting the love of two parents and way more individual attention. Attachments are made so quickly with these children because they give themselves to you completely right away and are so trusting. This trip also confirmed for me that adoption is definitely part of my future, as I want to be able to provide a loving, Christian home for children who may not ever know the love of Christ, especially from parents. God is working in amazing ways on the island of Jamaica and I’m so glad I got to witness and be part of what He is doing there.
